It's thought the singer could join the show in 2010, when current Dr David Tennant is replaced by the newly announced Matt Smith.
Executive producer of Dr Who, Piers Wenger, told the Telegraph of Allen's possible role: "We would never cast anyone on the basis of their
celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we would be delighted. It would be a lot of fun."
Others said to be in with a chance of playing the new assistant are model Kelly Brook and former S Club 7 singer / Strictly Come Dancing contestant Rachel
Stevens - although Stevens is also being tipped for a role in the second series of Merlin.

The Brit It-model has been tipped for the coveted role of Doctor Who's sidekick, with producers on the hunt for a 'high-profile'
female to star alongside the new doctor, little-known actor Matt Smith.
Executive producer, Piers Wenger, revealed that he was on the hunt for someone who could replicate the success of Billie Piper, who was best known for her music career before taking on
the role of Rose in the cult BBC show.
He explained, 'Someone terribly exciting like Billie, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other
reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly.'
Other names reportedly on the table include Lily
Allen, Kelly Brook and Rachel Stevens.
Fuelling the rumours, Wenger commented on Allen, stating, 'We would never cast anyone on the basis of their celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we

Brook and Stevens are also possibilities, after becoming high-profile public favourites during their respective appearances on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.

During an interview on last night's edition of The One Show Kelly Brook revealed that the Doctor Who
casting team are interested in casting her as the new assistant.
In the BBC1 programme, screened live last night in the UK, the former model and Big Breakfast presenter was asked by
host Christine Bleakley for some info after revealing that the actress was second favourite to play the Eleventh Doctor's traveling companion - to which a
surprised-looking Brook exclaimed, "Really?"
However, she continued saying, "I don't know anything about it. I know some casting directors came to see my play but
that's as far as I know." (The play in question is Fat Pig which came to the end of its run in November of last year.)
Kelly Brook gained success in the UK in the Nineties through her modeling and advertising but went onto to find fame presenting
The Big Breakfast on Channel 4. Since then, Brook has competed in Strictly Come Dancing and will be part of the judging panel in this
year's Britain's Got Talent.
But don't hold that against her as she can act, with a number of stage productions under her belt along with appearances in
shows such as Smallville and Hotel Babylon.
The edition of The One Show is available, for a limited time, on the BBC iPlayer.
